By turning plastic waste into a \u201ccommodity\u201d, our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/project\">project<\/a>s will play an important role in making a significant contribution towards the advancement of clean <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/energy\">energy<\/a> generation.<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<p>Waste-to-Energy is one of the circular economy solutions that can deliver economic, social, and environmental co-benefits by tackling widespread chronic waste problems while reducing emissions and creating alternative, sustainable power for the UK.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Southport<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Southport is a new waste-to-fuels (\u2018WTF\u2019) plant by Shankley Biogas Ltd, a 100%-owned subsidiary of Kibo Energy, with a projected capital expenditure of c. \u00a346 million. Located in the county of Merseyside, north-west of England on Southport\u2019s largest industrial estate, it is a brownfield site that lies 40 minutes away from three major motorways \u2014 M6, M57 an M58 \u2014 providing access to most major hubs in the UK. It is bounded to the south by Southport\u2019s main 132 KV sub-station and is 300 metres from the Southport main incoming gas main and the town\u2019s main gas distribution network.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The plant is in RIBA stage 2\/3 and will supply the local grid with bio-methane (green gas) and power. Planning permission has been granted for the site, with the construction of the plant expected to commence in Q2 2023 and the plant expected to be operational by Q34 2024.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The plant will be developed using anaerobic digestion (\u2018AD\u2019) technology, a proven technology used in more than 10,000 plants worldwide (650 of which are in the UK alone).
